As I set out on this adventurous journey of the unknown and excitement of studying abroad in Sydney, Australia at Macquarie University I wanted to capture and journal about all my experiences. Along the way, not only do I hope to make many life long friendships, but I also can't wait to meet the handful of family I still have over here in Australia.

Pancakes (March 31)
I made breakfast for Minna and Suzy this morning. I was going to do a full out 'american' breakfast but they were not in the mood for that so I will do it next time with more people. I cooked pancakes for them and they loved them. It was very interesting to see what they put on the pancakes. Suzy used maple syrup and brown sugar and Minna used heated up frozen berries and apples sauce because she does not like maple syrup. I found out that there is a difference between maple syrup and syrup and apparently what I made are the 'american' version of pancakes. Neither Minna or Suzy said that was what their pancakes at home are like, they have something more similar to crepes. I love learning all of the little things like that which differ from our cultures. I can't wait to make them a full on breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, toast, orange juice, etc. : ) I forgot to take a picture of the pancakes but we happened to finish the whole plate between the three of us . . . we were just a little hungry. I forgot how good pancakes taste especially on a weekend morning when every one is home.

Goon and Lemonade (March 30)
I thought I would educate you a little on the drink of choice around here for most college students, especially ones on a budget. At home we have this thing called box wine, franzia, slap the bag, etc. Here they have the same thing but it is a little better and they call it Goon!
You can purchase a 4 Liter box of Goon for only $11 or if you buy it with someone else you can get it for $10. Then you go to Woolworths and buy the homebrand Lemonade 1 liter (which is basically sprite but everyone here calls sprite Lemonade) for 88 cents and you are set for a few nights.
We mix the goon with a little bit of lemonade to give it a better flavor and to change it up. It is actually pretty good and very inexpensive.
Once the box is getting low you can take the bag out of the box and it takes up a lot less room and its easier to squeeze out when you get to the end. So just when you think its empty you easily will have a glass of wine left.
They sell both a red and white wine in this box and there are a few different brands but we mainly buy Golden Oak or Stanley.

How to go to the Bathroom (March 29)
I have noticed here that in almost every bathroom on the back of the stall door there are instructions and pictures showing you the correct and incorrect ways of how to go to the restroom. The first time I saw one of these I thought it was a joke that the place had going but apparently people do not know how to use the toilets right so they need to remind them or they just want to make sure that when you are drunk and may have forgotten that you not only have instructions on how to pee but also illustrations. There are a few different looking versions of these signs but they all have the same thing. I don't know who wouldn't know how to use the toilet but apparently it has happened enough that you will see these signs in a lot of restroom stalls. Enjoy the photos!
This is the most popular one that is on most stall doors |
Global Leadership Program (March 28)
Today I had my first Global Leadership Program (GLP) colloquia. GLP is a program Macquarie University offers that allows students to enhance their degree and develop their potential to become a global leader. The program can equip you with the leadership potential, professional skills and international experiences to pursue a truly international career.
For the program we have to attend 5 colloquies that are each 3 hours long learning about different issues and learning new lessons. We also have to attend the Distinguished Speaker Series Event towards the end of the semester where they have someone who is very well known come and speak with us. We have a networking social before then we have the speaker present and it is always somewhere downtown.
So far I have completed 2 of the 5 colloquies. I did one called Business Etiquette and the other was was called Leadership.
They have one conveyer come and speak to you and they are all different. I really enjoyed both of the colloquies that I have been to so far and I look forward to attending the other 3 that I will sign up for.
At the end of the program you receive a GLP Certificate and Resume saying all the programs you did and what you accomplished. It is going to be a great asset to add to my resume and have to present in all my future job interviews and application processes.

An Afternoon with Suzy (March 27)
I had a long day of studying and had not exercised in a while so I joined Suzy and went to the swimming pool to do some laps. It felt so good to get back in the water and swim again. It made me realize how much I really do miss swimming and being on a swim team. It was a great break from studying and it was so refreshing and a perfect workout.
After doing laps and showering we went to Woolworth's to go grocery shopping and get food for dinner. I ended up making an egg drop soup, which I accidentally added to much soy sauce so it was a little on the salty side, whoops. I also made steamed brussel sprouts and carrots with roasted almonds and sauteed onions. Suzy made homemade spring rolls that were delicious!

Job Hunt Continues (March 26)
After not getting the job I did not let that stop me or put a damper in my search I am still on the lookout and trying to be as proactive as I can.
I emailed the priest of the parish I have been going to the past few Sundays and asked him if he could help me out at all by sending and email to the parishioners and the parents at the sister school (its like St. Edwards, it has a school and a church under one name). He responded back to me saying he would put an advertisement in their weekly bulletin called 'The Good Oil." I was very appreciative of this gesture and hope that I will be contacted this upcoming weekend by some people who want an awesome babysitter : )
I also thought about Juice Plus and decided I wanted to start my business back up and grow it here in Australia. I have begun the process of reeducating myself and getting ready to do wellness presentations to people and groups here in Sydney. Although I am a bit nervous I am also very excited at this opportunity. I found one person on a google search who is with Juice Plus in Sydney and messaged her so we will see where things go!

Bennett Street (March 25)
After booking my New Zealand trip I realized how low I was running on money so I decided I need to start looking for job. I applied for at least 30 jobs through local job websites and said a prayer to my Great Grandpa Desmond and GG asking them to help me out. I know they have been watching over me the whole time I have been here but I just needed a little extra help.
One lady I heard back from right away and it was a response to a house cleaning position, yes a house cleaning position I applied to every job I could. I responded and we set up a time to meet. Her address was on Bennett St. I thought this was definitely a sign from my Great Grandpa and GG, especially my GG because Bennett my little brother was her absolute favorite, so I took this as a sign to them answering my prayers.
I went to the interview and thought it went well. Unfortunately I did not get the job because she wanted someone that would be more long term, which is completely understandable. I am kind of glad it did not work out too because the place was very hard to get there and took an hour each way. I know this was just a little sign from my great grandparents letting me know that they are looking after me and everything will be okay.

Darling Harbour (March 24)
At midnight tonight it was Tim's 21st birthday so a big group of us went down to Darling Harbour to help him celebrate. Darling Harbor is one of the world's leading waterfront leisure and entertainment destinations. It is a harbour that is adjacent to the city center of Sydney and has a large recreational and pedestrian precinct. It is named after Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling, who was Govenor of New South Whales (NSW, the states I live in). It was originally part of the commercial port of Sydney housing railways, freight consolidation, and more but then it was recommended that the center was inefficient and should be moved and the land used for other public purposes and it was.
We ended up going to this really fun bar right on the water called Docks. We got there early so we did not have to pay a cover charge and we were able to snag our own couch area. To top the evening off they had a fireworks show that was beautiful and so fun to watch and help Time celebrate his 21st.

Funnel Web Spiders (March 23)
Recently we have been encountering a lot of spiders and bugs. In my apartment it has not been that bad because we keep our place pretty clean, but across the hall is another story.
Encountering the usual cockroach, big moths, or the other bugs here is not that big of a deal but with in a few days of each other our neighbors across the hall have found a very big huntsman spider (we found one in our apartment which I thought was big but compared to this one it was not) as well as a funnel web spider.
Huntsman spiders are know for their speed and mode of hunting. They are also called giant crab spiders because of their size and appearance. They prefer woody places to live in and get very big. These spiders aren't dangerous, just very hard to kill and scary.
Funnel web spiders on the other hand are a bit more dangerous. Australian funnel-webs are one of the three most dangerous spiders in the world and are regarded by some to be the most dangerous. These spiders are not scared of you and are ready to attack.
Having such dangerous spiders right across the hall from me is not very comforting but I am just grateful we did not find the Funnel Web spider in our apartment or else I don't think I would have been able to sleep. Hopefully they just stay across the hall till I leave : )

First Presentation and Test (March 22)
This week I had my very fist test as well as a group presentation. The test was in my Organizational Behavior class and most of it was common sense or applying key words to scenarios. I think I did pretty good on it especially for my first test.
My group presentation on the other hand was just okay. We had exactly a week to put everything together and do our research. We were the first group to go so our teach is being lenient thank god, but for the first group and my first presentation I think we did well.
I have found that the teachers here are not clear at all about what they want and they tend to contradict themselves and always make last minute changes. So it makes it hard to follow the rubric and do the things the way they want because it is never clear. The whole 'she'll be right' attitude when it comes to learning and doing assignments is very frustrating when we are used to everything being laid out and clear at home, but it is a great learning experience.
On a more exciting note I have officially booked my flights to New Zealand for our mid-semester break. I will be going from the 12 of April to the 30 of April!! I booked a bus that is going to take me all around the North and South Island. Here is a map of all the places I will be going in 18 days! If you want to look at it in more detail you can go to kiwiexperience.com.au and I am doing the Sheepdog Pass.

Tasty Cheese (March 21)
Shopping here has been a big adjustment. There are very few things that have the same name and look the same. Some examples are Rice Krispies are called Rice Bubbles, red peppers are called capsicum, corn chips can never be found in the chips section, smiths chips are basically Lays chips, etc.
One thing that you would not expect to be that different is cheese, well it is. There pretty much are only two types of cheese here there is Kraft singles (regular or light) and then Tasty cheese. Tasty cheese comes in pre-slices, blocks, cubes, etc. But yes if you are looking for cheese that is pretty much your options. When I fist started shopping I was getting the Kraft singles because I thought the 'tasty' cheese would be even worse then Kraft but in fact its not. Tasty is the real cheese and Kraft is the fake one. Tasty cheese is pretty much cheddar cheese, but it is also made by Kraft. All of the cheese here are white and it's hard to find a mexican blend for tacos or other varieties of cheese flavors. I never realized how much I liked and ate cheese until I couldn't find any of the cheeses here.

Fitness Test (March 20)
With our gym membership we have a lot of perks including free classes, fitness evaluation, workout plans, and more. Today I had my initial consultation where they took my measurements, did a fitness test, wrote down my goals and made a workout plan for me.
Thank god I had a girl because this was a lot more challenging then I thought it would be. She tested my flexibility, how many full range sit ups and push ups I could do in a minute, and then I had to do an elliptical test. On this is started off slow and then the resistance became greater with every level. I was able to complete up to level 9. I was well above average which I was really happy to hear.
The girl who did all the tests for me set up a great workout plan of what I should do for warm up, cardio, weights, etc. After a few weeks I will go back to her, she will retest me and give me a new plan.
It is so nice to have a plan and not have to think about what I am going to do when I go to the gym. She gave me some great new exercises to do and definitely is challenging me. Now I just have to get my butt over to the gym and make sure I go a few days a week. (the hardest part)

Tim Tam's (March 19)
Not only was it Mexican Monday but it also was Scottish Rachel's birthday. Due to this special occasion Rose and I made her one of the most amazing homemade cakes.
We made, from scratch, a very unique and special choclate devils food cake. We altered the recipe to make it a super chocolatey cake that melts in your mouth.
We made the chocolate cake base and before we cooked it we added Dairy Milk Milk Chocolate and Dairy Milk with Crunchie. The Dairy Milk with crunchie is a combination of Hokey Pokey Honeycomb Pieces mixed with Dairy Milk, milk chocolate. Dairy Milk is the chocolate that you will find everywhere around here if you want chocolate. They have several different flavors and they are all milk chocolate (you can't find a dark chocolate one)
For the toppings of the cake we melted the left over chocolates and added thick cream to make a delicious chocolate frosting. On top of the frosting we crushed up two different flavors of Tim Tam cookies, white chocolate and caramel.
These are amazing tasting cookies that is chocolate or some other cream between two chocolate wafer layers, all covered with milk or dark chocolate. They aren't actually called cookies but rather biscuits or biccie in oz slang. All of their cookies they call biscuits, but they are to die for. Not only do people love eating Tim Tam's but they do this thing with them called the Tim Tam Slam. For the Tim Tam Slam you take a hot beverage (normally coffee, tea, or hot chocolate). You then take your Tim Tam and nibble off opposite corners of the rectangular cookie. One nibbled off corner goes in your drink and the other in your mouth. You begin sucking all of your worth to try and get the liquid. When you do finally get the liquid 'hit' off the Tim Tam you pop the cookie into your mouth and eat it. If you try and keep drinking your drink the wafer will disintegrate into Tim Tam sludge. I have yet to try this little game of theirs but I am not opposed to trying it at all, its just been a little warm for hot drinks.
We sprinkled the crushed Tim Tam's over the frosting and there we had it, we had made one of the best cakes. The whole cake was gone in a matter of seconds after we sang happy birthday and cut it up for everyone.

St. Anthony's Parish (March 18)
Today I tried out the other church that is close to wear I live. It was about a 20 minute walk to a church called St. Anthony's Parish. A little bit about the church: Due to the large number of Italians in Marsflied (the city where the church is located), it was decided to name the Parish after one of the most popular Italian saints. St. Anthony is known as 'il Santo' in Padua where he died and is buried in the great basilica there. Father Cusack arranged the building of the old church/school which was opened June 24 1934.
This is a very old church and you can tell when you go inside. It seems like most churches around here are pretty old. They had carpet on the kneelers and it was just a very simple basic church. I went to the 6pm mass which had no music, but the young kids were heavily involved in helping with the mass. You could tell the priest had a great love for kids. They did not have alter servers and it was a very laid back mass. The priest pretty much did everything himself. It was an interesting mass with a very nice homily. I definitely want to go back to the 9am one to see what that mass is like and they also serve tea and biscuits for free after mass. I also really liked it because I could easily walk there (there is a hill but its not too bad).
Here is my attempt at taking 'blind' photos. It was more of a point and shot and hope for the best.

St. Patrick's Day (March 17)
In Australia, St. Patrick's Day celebrations have taken place on March 17 since 1810, when the then Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, declared the date an official day of celebration for the Irish and those of Irish heritage. 200 years later, Sydney is still celebrating with an annual street parade and family day on the third Sunday of March. So this year St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 18th with a parade on George street and continued celebrations at Hyde Park. The Sydney St. Patrick's Day Parade is the third largest in the world. So we did not really celebrate St. Patrick's Day today. I did wear green of course, but the weather was rainy and gloomy all day. I took advantage of the poor weather by researching and start planning my spring break to New Zealand!!
It was Rachel, one of the girls in our apartment building, 21st Birthday at midnight tonight so we had a birthday party for her in her apartment and headed down to the city to Star Bar on George Street.
Tonight was kind of a sad night because my camera broke. I have dropped my camera so many times but this was just one drop too many unfortunetly. My screen cracked and went black. This normally would not be a problem but because the whole camera is touch screen I can no longer change settings, adjust things, and basically use my camera. I am still able to take photos but I just can't adjust anything.
